A High Protein Diet

Why a High Protein Diet is Essential for Bodybuilders

As a gym goer or endurance / strength athlete there is one nutrient you should focus on getting, protein. Proteins are essential for muscle growth and the repair of torn muscle tissue as a result of training. When we workout and breakdown our muscles, protein is generally the foundation for repair. Protein can be found in meat, fish, cheese, nuts, protein shakes, BBW Premium Casein and other high protein foods.

Protein consists of amino acids that are combined together. There are 20 naturally occurring amino acids. The body can produce many of them, but there are eight essential amino acids that can only be obtained by eating foods that contain them. Every cell in the body is partially made up of proteins that are subject to constant wear and replacement.

Amino Acids explained – most proteins that can be found within foods are not ‘complete’ protein and are missing one or more essential amino acids that your body requires. Essential Amino Acids (EAA)are proteins not manufactured by our bodies and therefore we need to add them in to our diet, while non-essential amino acids can be manufactured by our bodies.

After training of most forms our bodies require EAA’s to repair fully and thus giving us the best opportunity for muscle gain. Failing to fuel our bodies with proper protein sources can result in a lack of gains regardless of our efforts in the gym.

Bio-availability: this represents the percentage of just how much our bodies can make use of certain protein sources. Our bodies and digestive systems absorb some protein’s better than others and also certain sources will provide a higher amino acid profile.

Harm or benefit

A definite plus is effective weight loss. Minus – a large amount of protein consumed can increase the level of cholesterol in the blood, especially due to products of animal origin: meat, milk, eggs. The lack of complex carbohydrates (whole grain bread, cereals) creates a shortage of important nutrients. Therefore, it is very important to maintain a balance of proteins, fats and carbohydrates so that you can lose weight without problems.
